GLA was tasked with the design of site, hardscape and planting plan for a private residence located on the Severn River near Annapolis.
The residence was located on a wooded bluff overlooking the Severn River. I was responsible for site design, grading, hardscape, tree preservation, construction documents and site observation.
In collaboration with Graham Landscape Architecture
Our goal was to integrate the new house and landscape with the existing topograpy and flora of the site. Jay Graham, the principle of the firm, created a more manicured entry garden using non-native species. We employed a palette of native species on the rest of the site. My focus was the rear yard and slope.
A major challenge was providing access to the water at base of  the steep 50’ bluff.  This was done by building steps integrated into a series of retaining walls. Native trees, shrubs and ground covers blend with existing native flora. Intermediate levels at each retaining wall provide flat areas, one of which provided a secluded meditation nook overlooking the Severn.
