This project on the Eastern Shore of Maryland involved the renovation and expansion of an existing house on a waterfront property.  The client’s program included a pool, new driveway, fencing, and places for rest and meditaton.  This was achieved through the creation of a series of walkways, outdoor rooms and layered perennial beds.  Responsibilities included overall site design, grading plan, hardscape and planting plan, construction details and construction observation.

The pool and pergola were laid out on axis with the large house addition, extending the order of the house into the landscape, while engaging with the surrounding Chesapeake Bay

The driveway pull off is located where the clients typically come and go during their daily routine. The design here, a part of the front entry garden, creates a pleasant sense of arrival.

The circular garden is part of the entry garden to the main house as well as an arbored gateway to the beach. The low picket fencing, perennials and small flowering trees create a sense of enclosure for the client and their guests, encouraging them to linger and meditate.
